September Patrol of Zones 2 and 3

On September 17 I paddled across most of Zone 2 and a portion of Zone 3 into Paige Brook. The north shore of Zone 2 is very shallow and sandy with very sparse aquatic growth. I did note something new for me - aquatic moss - the first time it has been noted in the northern part of the Lake.

I also paddled into Paige Brook to see if I could spot the native milfoil reported by Tim Keith. Paige Brook is very shallow and protected from wind-induced waves and has dense aquatic growth that includes native milfoil, purple bladderwort, common bladderwort, flat-leaf bladderwort, native water naiad, ribbon-leaf pondweed and very sparse waterweed (Elodea). I captured a few underwater photos with my phone and spotted a small turtle sitting on the bottom in one of the photos.

Aquatic Moss in Zone 2 - it is very sandy along this part of the shoreline and sand partially covers the moss.

Leaves of flat-leaf bladderwort - Paige Brook. Note the alternating branch divided leaves that are typical of this plant.

Turtle hiding on the bottom of Paige Brook. Note the bright green basal leaves of lilies and purple bladderwort.

The underwater photos are just great! You can really see the native milfoil so much better than from the surface and what a nice shot of the turtle. It looks like a young snapping turtle to me.
